Health Care & Midwife Assistant Course This is a 12 week course with a 12 week practicum. A Midwife Assistant serves midwives, as they care for their clients. The assistant's care is primarily of women and families with normal pregnancies, and is always under the supervision of a professional health care provider, or health care system supervisor. In this program, the students learn basic, entry level health care skills with a specific focus on midwifery in the community. This care includes basic prenatal care, labor, birth, postpartum and newborn care. It also gives an introduction to various international requirements for midwifery credentials, writing midwifery protocols, emergency care, and timely transfers to a higher level of medical care. The midwifery instructors and clinical preceptors, who verify documentation of knowledge and skills achievement, are health care providers holding professional credentials in their field. This is an excellent entry point for those who wish to become professional midwives, or community midwives. This course has a field assignment/practicum available with qualified health care providers and midwives, to give the students guided, reinforced experiential learning. The course may be offered in sessions that allow experience to be gained that connects to their current study topics.
Health Care Assistant Seminar This is a 6 week seminar that focuses on the initial health care skills of a Health Care/Midwife Assistant. Some students would like to come to this introductory training seminar before they take on the demands of a full-length three year midwifery school. The Assistant primarily serves the midwife as she serves women and families with normal pregnancies. Students learn basic, entry level health care skills with a specific focus on midwifery in the community.
